The Houston Bowl

The EV1.net Houston Bowl was originally known as the galleryfurniture.com Bowl. The Bowl was created by Jerry Ippoliti, who brought the game to Houston in 2000.

The first three Bowls featured battles between teams from the Big 12 Conference and Conference USA. The first two galleryfurniture.com Bowls were held in the Reliant Astrodome. In 2002, the game became the Houston Bowl and moved to Reliant Stadium.

The first Bowl game on December 27, 2000, was an offensive battle won by Conference USA's East Carolina over the Big 12's Texas Tech, 40-27. A crowd of 33,000 saw the two teams roll up 481 yards in offense by ECU and 369 yards by Tech.

Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury, a national star this year, was only a sophomore then but he was expected to dominate. Instead, it was ECU's David Garrard completing 17 of 27 passes and running for 33 yards, including a six-yard run for the team's first touchdown. Garrard was the first Bowl MVP. However, ECU receiver and returner Keith Stokes stole the show from the quarterbacks with an amazing 266 total yards. That included a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The second Bowl game on December 28, 2001, was a re-match of old Southwest Conference rivals-Texas A&M of the Big 12 and Texas Christian University of Conference USA. The Aggies snapped a four-game bowl losing streak to beat TCU 28-9 before 53,000 fans.

A&M's defense was the dominant force with four interceptions, six sacks and a minus-26 yards rushing allowed TCU. True freshman cornerback Byron Jones accounted for three of those interceptions. Jones won the Bowl MVP award in his first career start.

In the Houston Bowl on December 27, 2002, Oklahoma State of the Big 12, in its first bowl game since 1988, defeated Southern Miss of Conference USA 33-23 before 44,000 fans.

OSU set numerous Bowl records as wide receiver Rashaun Woods had nine receptions for 164 yards, both Houston Bowl records, and one touchdown. Woods was named both MVP and Offensive Player of the Game. Other Bowl records broken were quarterback Josh Fields throwing for 310 total yards and tailback Tatum Bell running for 160 total yards as well as was the longest run from scrimmage (88 yards). Kicker Luke Phillips' four field goals was a Bowl record and he broke the record for the longest field goal twice, first with a 46-yarder in the first quarter and then with a 52-yard field goal in second quarter.
